The predominant wind in the region is northerly, which often creates offshore conditions at Mareta. This offshore wind helps improve wave shape and quality, making the surf conditions more organised compared to other exposed beaches in Sagres surfing spots.

Mareta functions with swell from the southeast to south quadrant. These swells typically have a shorter period and higher frequency, resulting in smaller but consistent waves — ideal for beginner surf practice, surf lessons in Sagres, and early-stage progression in the water.

Beliche Beach

Beliche is one of the main surf waves in the Sagres region and one of the most respected high-performance surf spots in the Algarve. Located below steep cliffs, Beliche offers a slightly more protected setup compared to fully exposed west coast beaches, while still receiving solid Atlantic swell. On smaller days, it can provide fun and manageable waves for intermediate surfers, and it is often considered an ideal spot for the transition from beginner to intermediate level due to its easy access and more approachable conditions when the swell is smaller.

However, because of its accessibility and wave quality, Beliche can also become very crowded, especially on smaller and cleaner days.

When the swell increases, the wave becomes far more technical and demanding. Under the right conditions, Beliche can produce clean tubular waves in the 2 to 3 meter range — and sometimes even bigger. The spot is especially known for its hollow sections and strong wave shape during more powerful swells.

Beliche is a beach break that works well across all tide stages, although the best and most critical conditions are usually revealed during low tide, when the waves become faster, hollower, and more performance-oriented.

The spot also has a strong and significant bodyboarding community, with many local bodyboarders considering Beliche one of the best barreling waves in the region.
